Our History
La Casa de las Bugambilias Bed and Breakfast was originally the home of the Cabrera Arroyo family. Rene Cabrera and Mariana Arroyo raised their six children in this beautiful home located in the heart of Oaxaca. In 1992, the family decided to formally turn their home into one of the first Bed and Breakfast in Oaxaca. A truly family-run business, Las Bugambilias Bed and Breakfast is the result of the creativity and energy of Mariana and her children.
Through the years, the services offered by Las Bugambilias Bed and Breakfast have grown dramatically. The first expansion included the building of an indigenous steam bath (the temazcal) and the introduction of traditional Oaxacan cooking classes. These new opportunities now allowed guests to not only enjoy the peaceful refuge of the B & B but to have a more profound adventure that explored authentic Oaxacan culture.
In 1994, Pilar Cabrera, one of Mariana’s eldest daughters returned from Mexico City opened the now legendary La Olla Restaurant on the property of Las Bugambilias. Pilar’s unique culinary vision further expanded the growing popularity of the family business and would soon give birth to the Casa de los Sabores Cooking School.
In 2002, on the site of another family property in the historical center of Oaxaca, the Cabrera Arroyo family opened their second Bed and Breakfast, the Casa de Los Milagros, under the management of René Jr. The home offers a beautiful refuge in the center of the city.
A third bed and breakfast, El Secreto, opened in 2011, opposite the Botanical Gardens, also in the historical center of the city. This intimate, modern three-room Bed and Breakfast represents the family’s latest aesthetic and culinary vision.
Finally, Rene Jr., launched Casa de las Bugambilias Tours, completing the Cabrera-Arroyo family’s tourist enterprises. Committed to helping all guests realize their travel dreams, whether that be a quiet and restful retreat from their bustling lives or a life-changing adventure, La Casa de las Bugambilias is the ideal location for your journey.
